EMAS (Engineered Material Arresting System)

Product:

EMAS (Engineered Material Arresting System)

Description:

The EMAS (Engineered Material Arresting System) is a safety facility installed along the extension of the runway end. When an aircraft overruns the runway, the engineered materials of the EMAS absorb the aircraft's kinetic energy through controlled crushing, thereby achieving a safe stop.

A typical EMAS consists of an arrester bed, backfill sections, and taxiways. The arrester bed is located along the runway extension, with a width not less than that of the runway. Its thickness ranges from tens of centimeters to several tens of centimeters depending on the design, and its length varies between tens of meters and 150 meters. In practical applications, the length, structural layout, material properties, and installation location of the EMAS can be customized according to the geographical conditions of different airports and the types of aircraft operating there. This ensures effective arrestment while guaranteeing the safety of the aircraft and its passengers.

As a technical equipment proven to effectively reduce the risk of runway overruns, EMAS has been validated in practice. Some countries promote the application of EMAS technology through mandates by civil aviation authorities and substantial funding subsidies. For example, the U.S. FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) has incorporated EMAS into its "Airport Improvement Program" for funding support. To date, over 120 sets have been installed, successfully arresting 22 incidents of aircraft overrunning the runway.
